[that doesn't sound fine to her??? if YJH is being kabedoning, then HSY is giving the vibe of someone crossing her arms and acting petulant, but with her eyes darting around --]
Be more specific. There's a ton of shit I didn't tell either of you.
It's a young boy in a hospital gown. He's incredibly small and skinny for his age, bandages plastered on his face and wrapped around his wrists and neck. From behind them, dark bruises peek out, still in the long process of healing. But more alarming than that are the tears that fall from his dark eyes, his small hands clutched to his chest as he wanders through the library building, head swiveling from one side to the other as his frightened, confused gaze lands on the people frozen in place.
He makes a quiet noise in the back of his throat, almost a whimper, as he shuffles his hospital slippers against the floor, then finds a corner to sink down into. He doesn't know what's happening, why he's here, or how to get back. One minute he'd been lying in bed, the nurses occasionally coming in to check up on him, and the next, he's in this strange new place.
Maybe it's a dream... Dokja lowers his head into his hands and tightly closes his eyes. Maybe he can wake up... ]
Luckily(?) for Dokja, Sooyoung knows all of his haunts as well as she knows the back of her hand, so it makes sense that she'd also be here at this library, looking for him. It's not like she's needy or lonely (she is), or even paranoid (she is), but there is an edge to her that's only sharpened since Yoo Joonghyuk disappeared, an edge that's made her shut herself up in her office, scrawling scathing lines about the idiocy of certain regressors who have the gall to just up and leave and sometimes frantic, desperate lines about things she inevitably crosses out each time, scarlet with embarrassment.
this is one of those rare moments when she's not doing either, called 'seeing what Kim Dokja is up to and making excuses to tag along with him, all while pretending everything is still fine'. She already has today's excuse in her head, something about dragging him out to eat, never mind that it always tastes inferior to Yoo Joonghyuk's cooking, never mind that she's been enjoying how it's always the three of them, and how she can't endure now that it's only two. Those are subjects that she's learned not to bring up, and will continue to not do so. So instead, she moves down the stacks, heading for the sections that she knows Dokja enjoys reading most, turns the corner, and draws up short.
Her first instinct is to shout 'HEY', which is stupid, because whoever is hunched down at the corner is clearly just a frightened child. Her next is that this is clearly a child who is probably lost, sleeping, or crying -- all things that she's frankly not equipped to deal with, and yet... She walks down the aisle anyway, resisting the urge to groan, mouth opening instead to say something truly inspired like 'hey kid, are you lost?' and then she stills, eyes focused on the pale white of this child's hospital gown. She hasn't been in enough hospitals in Springstar to know, but she knows enough that those clinics are markedly different, no one there dresses like that. Not like a patient at a hospital in Seoul would, with that gown and slippers and that Sooyoung's intimately aware of, from memories that are not her own and are at the same time, hers.
...she recognizes those bandages. the ones on his face and neck and elbows, the ones littered on him like puzzle pieces snapping into place. She feels like she's having an out of body experience, dazed with shock.]
[ With his eyes closed and his hands in the way to further block out any light, Dokja finds some comfort in the darkness. He thinks he fades in and out of consciousness, his frazzled mind exhausted by this strange experience, but then he's abruptly pulled awake by the sound of his name.
When he peeks out from behind his hands, there's some hope that he'll find a nurse and that he'll be back in his hospital room, the familiar bustle of the staff just outside the door. But he doesn't get either of these things, his gaze landing on a woman he's entirely unfamiliar with, and that sends him scurrying back against the corner despite it no longer having any more room for him. His heart starts beating faster in his chest at the sight of this moving adult, an odd occurrence when everyone else in the library is frozen still.
But... she knows his name.
He hesitates as he lowers his hands a bit more, showing his battered face to stare up at her with wide, cautious eyes. They shine with the presence of tears even now, but there's a look of curiosity present as well. ]
[It takes a moment for Sooyoung to realize that time has actually frozen around her. She'd thought it a side-effect from her own shock, you know -- like those moments in movies when time slows down to a crawl, right when the protagonist is on the brink of discovering something, reuniting with someone. ...Would this count as a reunion? Can you reunite with someone you never technically met? There was a book she read once, that had something like that -- meeting someone you only met before in your dreams.
I just want to meet him again.
She only remembers wanting to. Nothing about what she'd do when she did. Her nerves are all strung up, she feels as tightly wound as the bandage on her wrist even as she fights to remain calm on the outside. She looks at him for another moment, then walks over to him -- the confident stride at odds with her nerves.]
[ also i guess this can happen after he and gray move in
The loss of his home along with Gray's points to the disastrous aftereffects of the quickly multiplying roots, which point Sooyoung towards the obvious fact that her business is probably going to be next in line if steps aren't taken to preserve it. And since Eustace is her only favorite employee, who else gets the privilege of being dragged along as they go scope out possible ways to keep the building intact. ]
You really think there's something we can do?
[ If he sounds dubious, it's because they are but two people and the building is but only concrete in the face of freak weather and insanely overgrown roots. But, well, he did say he would help her out and maybe more important, Dokja happens to be the co-owner and he owes Dokja a whole fuckton by this point, so here he is. ]
Maybe Sooyoung should care more about Springstar and its many inhabitants, but as always, all her concern is focused on a very narrow slice of the city: the house she lives in, occupied with people she cares for (not that she'd ever admit it), and the small business she'd started on a whim. She stares at the shop, tracking the already obvious cracks digging into the sidewalk, comparing their progress from yesterday's. The conclusion is obvious. Maybe the building will escape being cracked open like a egg, but there will be damage. Extensive damage.
...But for now, the building remains standing.]
...No.
[the answer is decisive, matter-of-fact. Maybe she should sound bitter or resentful, or at least sad. This is her business after all, her name is on the office door. But Sooyoung has lost so many things, she'd go insane if she cared about them all. ]
None of us know how to stop the roots, which is the only thing I can see helping at this point. [more than good intentions, at least. She props open the front door with a loose piece of rubble,] We're just grabbing what we can for now. The books will do in a pinch if the shitty weather keeps up.
[ It's alright if she doesn't feel any sadness, because he'll feel a thin sliver for both of them. The store might not be his, might not be anything more than a place where he'd spent some of his days, but during the time he'd worked there he'd been weirdly at peace. For a brief period of time in his life, everything had been normal. Uneventful. The type of life he might have enjoyed living, in another timeline.
(For a guy that pretends not to care most days, he sure does care a whole lot sometimes.)
Still, he also knows better than to get sentimental at a time like this. It's just a building. It can be rebuilt. There are plenty of things that can't be, things are more irreplacable. It's those that need to be saved right now.
Not the yaoi though. ]
I can grab those. You can head for your office if you need to.
[ Said as he steps through the door and towards the nearest shelf - unfortunately the mecha section and not the BL section. Maybe she has important shit she's squirreled away up there. ]
Something Sooyoung also has in common with him, if not for the little book cafรฉ she's spent the past few months in. She glances up at the stairs leading to her office at the mention, and maybe she has a sliver tucked away in her tsundere soul too, because she climbs up the steps and heads on over.
It's a tiny room, made more cramped by the stacks of paper littering the floor and the writing desk Cetina had given her, months ago. It's too big to try and bring back, that and Yoo Joonghyuk isn't around for her to bully him into carrying it for her. ...The thought makes her pause. As unattached as she is to this place, she still has memories. Kim Dokja holed up in a corner, taking refuge from the other customers. Yoo Joonghyuk looming over her shoulder, criticizing every other word on the page. The manuscript is still there, marked with neat notations in red. She'd thrown it in the trash after YJH edited it, annoyed at his interference.
She fishes it out, smoothing the crinkled pages. She can hear his sneer, sentimental, and for what?]
I don't want to hear that from a bastard who just up and left.
[But carrying on a conversation with the figment in her mind is a hobby she likes to indulge when she doesn't have anything else to do, which isn't what's happening at this moment. Sooyoung balls up the paper again and leaves it on the desk, exiting the office and heading down the stairs, where Eustace is sadly not in the BL section. She props one hand on her hip as she watches him work, then]
